Imported directly from Japan, this soil is used primarily for growing Azaleas and other Ericaceous plants. It has different properties to Akadama, in that the root hairs of the plants will penetrate the soil rather than growing around the grains.
It is incredibly light, but will hold an enormous amount of water, making it a usefull addition to a conventional soil mix based on Akadama for British species that suffer from leaf scorch.
We have taken to adding a little to every repotting mixture to enhance the waer holding ability of the soil- it allows longer intervals between watering.
